SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1 Released; Non-US 3G Version Waiting for Apple's Approval

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone

The new version of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone (v1.1) is now available on the iPhone App Store, which includes true 16×9 wide-screen support, improved remote control interface, faster speeds all around including channel changing, initial connection, remote control response.

However, SlingMedia is waiting to hear back from Apple on the much-awaited non-US version of their iPhone app, which will also work over iPhone's 3G connection.

The new version of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone has the following features:

  • Full 16x9 widescreen support (Slingbox SOLO, PRO, and PRO-HD only)
  • DISH Remote Access integration (DISH Network users only)
  • Faster start and channel change
  • Improved remote control interface
As you might know, SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone was restricted to work only over Wi-Fi as AT&T had concerns over bandwidth consumption. So it was good to hear that SlingMedia had also submitted a separate version of their iPhone app for users outside US, which will allow them to watch their favorite TV source such as DVR, digital cable, satellite receiver, or DVD player on their iPhone using it's 3G data connection.

SlingMedia has issued the following clarification to non-US users who were expecting this version to work over 3G:

There has been some confusion lately regarding whether this version would have 3G in the rest of the world which I'd like to clear up. 1.1 was always Wi-Fi only. We submitted another version of the app that works on 3G that is intended for the rest of the world. We have not heard back from Apple on that app yet, and will keep you posted.

We'll let you know as soon as we have any further updates on this version.

Do you think non-US carriers will allow Apple to approve the 3G version of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone?

Qik's iPhone App Can Now Upload Video Over 3G

Qik had recently released their iPhone app on the iPhone App Store for iPhone 3GS users.

Unfortunately, the official iPhone app had two major limitations, which severely affected its functionality.

They have released a new version of their iPhone app, which addresses one of the limitations.

1st limitation: The official iPhone app didn't work like their other mobile apps. It is a capture and upload app and doesn't broadcast live video from the iPhone.

2nd limitation: It worked only over Wi-Fi.

As expected, Qik didn't have any problems getting the new version of their iPhone app approved, which now works over Wi-Fi 3G. So it addresses one of the limitations.

Unfortunately, it still can't broadcast live video from the iPhone. The limitation is imposed by iPhone's SDK and not Qik's fault, but it restricts one of the core features of the application where users can stream live video from their mobile phone and see viewer comments show up on the screen while they are recording.

Let's hope Apple relooks at such limitations (some of which is due to pressure from carriers like AT&T) in the wake of FCC scrutiny over the rejection of Google Voice related iPhone apps.

You can download Qik's updated iPhone app using this direct iTunes link.
